## [Operational Control In The Network Transition 2.0 Era](https://info.etruckbizforfxg.com/blog/operational-control-in-the-network-transition-2.0-era)

Network 2.0 is changing what happens after your trucks leave the building. FedEx describes the model as a move toward one driver on each route handling a mix of shipments, with consolidated pickups and deliveries ([FedEx's Network 2.0 overview](https://www.fedex.com/en-us/network-2-0.html)). For a contractor, that raises a practical management question: once the morning plan meets the actual day, how do you know what needs attention while there is still time to act?

A truck leaving the terminal tells you the route has started. It does not tell you whether the driver understands the day's priorities, whether a developing problem has an owner, or whether a change has been handled. That is the difference I want to examine this week: getting dispatched versus maintaining operational control.

I'm talking with David Belle of Belle Logistics in Destin, Florida, about how he manages that responsibility. David uses the [eTruckBiz](https://www.etruckbiz.com/) OPTIX app as his primary operational monitoring tool and also works with us on payroll. I want to get past “I watch the operation” and into the details: what he checks, what makes him act, who does the work, and how he knows the issue is actually resolved.

## Operational control is more than seeing a problem

My working definition of operational control is simple: know what should be happening, see where the day is moving away from that plan, assign a response, and confirm the result. Visibility is part of it, but visibility alone is not management. A screen can show you something that needs attention; somebody still has to decide what to do and follow through.

Consider a pickup added after dispatch. FedEx offers same-day on-call pickups for expedited parcel shipments, so the work to be managed is not necessarily fixed when a driver leaves the building ([FedEx pickup scheduling](https://www.fedex.com/en-us/shipping/schedule-manage-pickups.html)). The management questions are straightforward: who sees the request, who confirms the driver knows about it, and who checks that it was completed within the applicable window?

I would ask the same kind of questions about a time-definite delivery at risk. What information do you need before deciding whether to call the driver, change the plan, or send help? How do you protect the commitment without creating an unnecessary second trip or putting pressure on somebody to drive unsafely?

That is where service and financial discipline belong in the same conversation. A rescue may be necessary, but it still deserves a cost review afterward. I want David to explain how he distinguishes a reasonable response to an unusual day from a recurring operating problem that needs a different plan.

## Where OPTIX fits, and what the owner still has to do

OPTIX's published capabilities include monitoring delivery and pickup status, viewing P&D productivity, tracking critical exceptions, and tracking time-definite stops and packages ([P&D OPTIX product listing](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/p-d-optix/id1527446277)). Those capabilities give us a starting point for the discussion, not an answer to how David runs his company. The useful part of this interview will be hearing which information he relies on and what he does with it.

I also want to understand the division of responsibility. What does David check personally, what does his manager handle, and what happens when either person is unavailable? If the routine only works when one particular person is watching, that is a dependency worth identifying before a busy day exposes it.

Payroll belongs in the conversation for a different reason. David uses [eTruckBiz](https://www.etruckbiz.com/)for that work, and I want to ask what remains on his desk, what is handled by our team, and whether that arrangement changes the time he can spend managing operations. We should hear the actual workflow before claiming it saves time or money.

The goal is not a software testimonial with the difficult parts left out. It is a practical look at how one contractor works to gain and maintain control: the checks, decisions, conversations, and follow-through behind the screen. David's examples will supply the substance of the interview that follows.

Not long ago, I sat down for dinner, in Columbus, Georgia, with two FedEx contractors — one brand new and one who’s been doing this for what feels like forever. Honestly, I didn’t expect the conversation that unfolded to hit me as hard as it did. I’ve been thinking a lot about it since then because I’m afraid that way too many “veteran” contractors have been conditioned to think much like the one I’m about to tell you about.

We were at this little place with the best shrimp and grits I’ve had in a long time. As it always does, the conversation turned to “not making any money”. As it did, I mentioned that several of our clients are running operations with 10% — even 12% or better — operating margins. Before I could take another bite, the longtime contractor quickly dropped his fork, leaned back, and basically said, “No way. That’s impossible.”

He wasn’t joking. He was genuinely angry — not at me, but at the thought that someone out there could make money doing the same thing he does every day. He was "visibly pissed”.

As a Service Provider, your focus is naturally dominated by the physical reality of the job. You are constantly monitoring safety, ensuring service reliability, managing fleet maintenance, and navigating the chaos of daily operations. Because your eyes are glued to the road and the terminal, you have to rely on someone else to handle the "boring stuff"—the administrative work, the payroll, and the bookkeeping.

Sometimes, this responsibility falls to a single, trusted administrative employee. You hand them the keys to the kingdom, trust that the numbers are right, and get back to managing your drivers.

**But recently, we have seen a disturbing trend that suggests this trust may be a liability.**

As a FedEx service provider, your week revolves around one thing: the settlement statement. That single, powerful document arrives like a report card, a detailed summary of your team’s cumulative hard work. It's the pulse of your business, and for many, it's the only metric that truly matters.

But what if we told you that focusing solely on your weekly settlement is like trying to navigate a vast ocean with only a tide chart? While it tells you what happened, it doesn't give you the full picture of your operational health, profitability, and long-term business value. To truly understand and grow your business, you need to look beyond the settlement statement and dive into a handful of core financial metrics that tell the real story of your operation.

This article will break down the five most important financial metrics for FedEx contractors. These aren't just numbers; they are powerful diagnostic tools that, when monitored regularly, can unlock unprecedented growth and profitability.

By any measure, it’s been, and continues to be, a challenging time to be running a transportation business. However, as we often see, there are many opportunities that present themselves during challenging times.

As we look ahead to better times in 2023, it’s important to take a look at where we are currently at and how we got here so that we avoid mistakes of the past.

Our current situation is rooted in the events of 2019. This period introduced the density-stop / ecommerce push from FedEx Ground. As ecommerce deliveries gained traction and increased in number, they fueled the deterioration of contractor per-stop operating margins.

As you know, ecommerce stops are paid at a lower rate and typically include fewer packages per stop vs. commercial stops, resulting in a stealthy revenue per stop decrease across your entire business.

Well, the time has finally come.

FedEx has officially announced the big move that we had known was coming for a long time.

[The announcement](https://www.freightwaves.com/news/fedex-launches-long-awaited-operational-integration) that they will be combining most of the operating components of their networks will trigger significant operational changes. The plan does include utilizing mostly contractors, even though [some are currently struggling.](https://www.yahoo.com/video/fedexs-ceo-chart-growth-plan-100527370.html)

Many will recall that we have been signaling for more than 5 years that a change was coming. By far the largest issue will be that the demands of the new network will force contractors who operate [Lifestyle Businesses into operating Transportation Companies](https://info.etruckbizforfxg.com/blog/why-is-fxg-transforming-the-biz).

The time has come to put old habits behind and embrace change, or get left behind.

But now, there is another added challenge that has reared its head. This one, along with inflation not seen for generations, is going to create some unprecedented financial problems that will test even the best operators…

A combination of events has spawned a crisis that we foreshadowed back in August of 2021 in our post:  the [Dark Side Of Density.](https://info.etruckbizforfxg.com/blog/the-dark-side-of-increased-density)

What we described in that post has ultimately proven to be true, and is now exacerbated by the quickly deteriorating economic conditions.

As business owners, solving problems is a daily occurance. This one however is going to need full attention, for an extended period of time.

Let's begin our look at what to do about all this by analyzing the root causes of why the issues now exist...

*This post is the second in a two-part series.*

In my last blog post, I shared that people often ask me, “Should I pay my drivers by the day or by the hour?”  My answer is based on comparing both methods, and I'll tell you why I recommend paying drivers by the hour.

Paying by the day is still most common because it’s a holdover from when delivery *volume was consistent and only 5-days per work week*.

As a result of adding residential service and e-commerce, package volume swings now vary widely on a daily basis. Paying drivers by the day has made business owner profitability more challenging.

*This post is the first in a series on choosing to pay drivers by the hour, or by the day.*

Almost every week, another new Contractor will ask me an old question.  Should I pay my drivers hourly, or by the day? There’s truly one right answer, but complex dynamics cause many new CSP’s to believe that the old ways of paying drivers are acceptable.

Many new Contractors do not bring transportation industry experience with them. Although it’s likely they achieved significant success in their previous ventures. That success can lead to a variety of ways they address driver compensation.

New Contractors typically choose to either keep the same practices as the previous owner, or they make drastic changes. If they choose the latter, it’s because they recognize the existing compensation method is not financially feasible.

Any investment made into a business should be measured by its return. Simply put, when businesses invest in a product or an initiative, they expect that the profits created by the investment will outweigh the cost of the investment.

This is no different in the transportation industry.

If you take a minute to think about what options you could invest in, that could provide you substantial returns, what is it that comes to mind? New trucks? The latest software package that promises the world? Some other shiny object?

There is one thing, that may not be obvious, that will no doubt provide you with a lasting return on your investment. Most larger companies understand that investing in this one thing provides big time returns, and don’t mind the investment it takes.

And now, this type of investment is available to you…

**Tips for transitioning to an EV fleet and the benefits for your business.**

The adoption of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) for fleets with daily return to base routes under 200 miles is becoming a fast-growing segment of the EV marketplace. More than two-thirds of surveyed fleets that have used BEVs plan to either pilot or purchase them in the next 12 months. \*

This move to EVs can be attributed to the significant operational savings and the positive environmental impacts of an EV fleet. With more and more fleet managers moving to EVs, you may ask yourself - Is an electric fleet right for my business? Here are a few things to consider.

*This blog post is written by our friends at Xos Trucks.*

The passenger transportation sector has seen a significant uptick in Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption over the last several years, yet the commercial side has been slower to follow.

Now, that’s changing. Increasing environmental regulations and a growing interest in reducing costs have begun to tip the scales toward more widespread fleet electrification.

As a fleet owner and operator, you might be asking yourself, “When, how, and *why* should I consider electric trucks for my business?” Unfortunately, there’s no simple, one-size-fits-all answer to “how” you should go about transitioning to electric, but “when” and “why” you should go electric can be more easily summarized.

Going electric can positively impact the efficiency and profitability of your business. Here’s a summary of the main reasons why you should consider electrifying your fleet.
